I see this all the time in IT sysadmin and network admin. It legit pisses me off the amount of time it takes to even be remotely competent in these positions and companies are like yeah its entry level and pays 25/hr on call and weekends as needed…when I was actively looking for work I’d submit resumes saying this is a bullshit posting and if someone agrees to running the backbone of your company at that price they are going to fuck it up.

      • Advertise job at 1/3 going rate
      • Get no applicants
      • Use this as justification to hire somebody from a cheaper country on a visa that you control
      • Pay the somebody 1/3 going rate, knowing that they will probably do lots of free overtime because of the chilling effect of a visa

Practically another form of modern-day slavery.

Don’t like your job and how much we pay you? Sure you can quit, but then it’s right back on the deported boat for you.

By the way I am going to need you to put in some weekend overtime. No we can’t pay, but if you want to keep your job…

I saw a posting for a mechanical engineer for $10p/h making espresso machines. Heavy lifting ability required. In a decent sized city.

Bruh, what? Please tell me you just don’t know what a technician is. And, also, kill yourself for offering a rate that insulting for a technician.

In case it’s a serious question, there’s a few reasons but one of them is so that they can be more selective in who they hire but the official reason will be “not qualified” and they can point at that minimum years. Of course they’ll never admit it.

They also do it to discourage so many applications. Or maybe they don’t want to fill the job at all and just say they are trying to get more workers.

The job market also let’s them do it. Out of necessity or desire, people are taking underemployed roles. Meaning that position that requires a masters degree has someone applying with a phd, masters applying for undergrad degree roles, etc.

Lots of other reasons. Doesn’t mean i have to like it though

Also lets them bully current employees by showing them how “barely over the minimum requirements” they are

      Ask me how I know

I’m mostly okay with these kinds of salary shenanigans, because those employers generally fuck themselves somewhere in the short to long terms. What grinds my gears is how employers think they get access to all of someone’s skills and their full work velocity despite deliberately underpaying. Almost invariably, this conversation comes up with one of my employers or contracts after they decided to cheap out.

“Oh, I recall that you have experience in [specific software engineering discipline].”

“That’s correct. I did that for [a bunch of] years.”

    “So, we have this pro—”

    “No.”

“No?! But you know this stuff. Also ‘other duties as assigned.’”

“And you’re not paying enough to get access to those skills.”

    “That’s insubordination!”

“So fire me and see what you’ll have to pay to replace me AND get someone who will do [engineering thing].”

Reminder that minimum wage just means they’d pay you less if they could get away with it.

I legit wish instant death upon the people in charge of this happening. Just sudden, Death Note style deaths. Not necessarily hear attacks, preferably much more painful.
