I was referring to the file size being the barrier. The 2024 large database size of 202GB is prohibitive for the average person’s resource capabilities. i.e. I have a home VPS host and I don’t even have that much free space. Your cloud operating costs would also go up with the storage and bandwidth use.

There’s also two separate issues I was kinda mixing up. I’m a developer who uses StackOverflow and would like to use a resource that is readily available. I think it’d take a few hours to setup even a smaller copy of SO, which isn’t ideal for answering a quick question. I also don’t want to setup a whole mirror site with custom work just for myself and because I’m paranoid Microsoft miight buy them and paywall SO overnight or something.

I’ve looked into this but they aren’t exactly small, it’s not a straightforward operation for even the average developer or systems engineer to restore these into a working format.

I was thinking we need something along the lines of a read only public mirror run by the proper open source community - e.g. SourceForge or a major Linux project… ISP’s and universities offer mirrors of Linux packages so this could be a resource offered in the same vein. That’s my line of thinking as far as a StackOverflow mirror goes anyway!

Is there a mirror for Stacks content? I’ve been concerned for some time that they are a vital resource that a corporation could ruin at any moment.

Anyone who still believes that these institutions are sufficient for maintaining a stable liberal democracy is just delusional, at this point.

Twenty years ago, I remember asking my high school teacher about how the legal system here in Australia works cause we don’t have a bill of rights. I was told the “traditions of Parliament” would protect free speech and human rights even though it’s not written down anywhere…

Fast forward twenty years and Australia’s government is fully in the pocket of monopolistic corporations and a handful of elite families who own the top banking industries - mining, gambling, etc.

Medical professionals can be particularly ignorant when it comes to the day to day life problems of their patients. I think it’s completely inappropriate to tell someone like a single mother on low income that her mood swings are just the result of some syndrome, can be managed with chemicals and is totally disconnected from the trouble in her life. Therapists will call her entitled for continuing to experience emotion. It’s sick.

I’m 37 this year and I remember being a kid at a time when we were all more optimistic and well off. When a middle class existed in the west. When we were told the world was our oyster and we just had to study and work hard to get anything we wanted. That piece of advice was valid to a handful of us millenials, diminishing to those born in the 1990s. My husband is 31 and has never been on an overseas holiday - the differences in privilege just being born 6 years later are stark and upsetting. It’s only gotten worse for younger generations and the people who did all this are cackling as they push their boots in harder on our throats.

As a pacifist I just don’t know what to do anymore other than try to live my life among the damned and hope it resolves itself before something comes for me and mine.

I don’t know whether to be happy they’re fighting or sad I agree with Steve Bannon about anything…

I’m from Australia, arguably a “safer” and “better off” nation where it’s no different with the mining industry. They have captured our politicians, the media and the minds of the average person. Anyone who dares to speak against Australia’s mining industry has their life ruined, or ended.

Maybe they should use some of that Amazon logging money to fix their roads…

Edit: In case it’s not clear cause I’m trying to oversimplify for dry wit, I’m criticizing the former Bolognaise government for cutting down the Amazon rainforest, starving the Earth of it’s oxygen factory and for all that unchecked greed not even making enough money for the nation of Brazil to maintain their infrastructure.
