I just back from vacation, stayed at a hotel that had free breakfast from 6-9. I was in that hotel for a full week, didn’t make it to breakfast once. Felt like a waste of money, waking up at noon and walking to a breakfast place nearby, but I’d rather pay for a meal than wake up early so 🤷♂️

A lot of them are pretty great people. Doesn’t mean I’d rather spend 3 hours a day sitting in traffic to see them, just means I low-key miss someone to bitch with.

jpreston2005@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Since George Floyd’s Murder, Police Killings Keep Rising, Not Falling0·1 month agofatal police shootings in more-Democratic states have declined 15 percent on a population-adjusted basis, with the rate holding relatively steady since Mr. Floyd’s death.
But in Republican-leaning states, they have risen 23 percent. And within those redder states, exurbs and rural areas, which tend to be more conservative than cities, have the highest rates of police killings.
You’re telling me that in republican bastion states of lower education, less unions, less social spending, and more racism, is tied to more violence and a greater amount of extra-judicial killings by the state-sanctioned corporation-protectors? But they have almost 4 weeks of training! How could this possibly be??
But don’t worry! They’re trying to make it worse! Far worse!
This week, the Justice Department said it would no longer investigate or oversee nearly two dozen police departments that were accused of civil rights violations, including in Minneapolis and Louisville, Ky. And in April, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at “unleashing” law enforcement, including by directing the U.S. attorney general to “provide legal resources” to defend police officers accused of wrongdoing.

Acting out towards self-preservation via unethical means is something that can be hand-waved away in an LLM, but once we reach true AGI, this same thing will pop-up, and there’s no reason to believe that 1. we would notice, and 2. we would be able to stop it. This is the kind of thing that should, ideally, give us pause enough to set some world-wide ground rules for the development of this new tech. Creating a thinking organism that can potentially access vital cyber architecture whilst acting unethically towards self-preservation is how you get Skynet.

I loved spending time at my girlfriends house especially, hanging out with her Mom and her Dad even if my gf wasn’t there. They were so nice, and you could tell had genuine affection for their children (and to some degree, me). I miss you Mr. and Mrs. Miller!

jpreston2005@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Straight woman case goes to the Supreme Court over discrimination against being denied promotion over gay co workers.0·4 months agoAmes worked for the Ohio Department of Youth Services, which oversees parts of the state’s juvenile corrections system. After a decade there, in 2014 she became the administrator of a program addressing prison rape. Five years later, she applied for a promotion.
Her supervisors turned her down, saying she lacked vision and leadership skills, eventually giving the position to a gay woman who had been at the department for a shorter time and, unlike Ames, lacked a college degree.
Not long after denying her the new position, her supervisors removed her from her existing job, telling her that they had concerns about her leadership and offering her a demotion that came with a substantial pay cut. She was replaced by a gay man with less seniority.
Sounds like she was a do-nothing karen that nobody liked, which makes the actions of her employer entirely reasonable. Everybody who has ever worked has had the displeasure of meeting one of these people that fails upward, and has an ego the size of Rhode Island.
Remember kids, all you have to do is not be a dick.

jpreston2005@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•More and more Americans are becoming 'ALICEs.' They can't afford rent and groceries but are falling through the cracks in the country's safety net.01·1 year agoIf we have programs set up to aid people that are earning 200-250% of the federal poverty level, then what it really says is that our federal guidelines for what constitutes “living in poverty” is drastically out of date.
$15,060 per year for 1 person
$31,200 per year for a family of 4 (Shouldn’t this be 4x the individual amount anyway?)
These are just ludicrous. avg rent on a 1 bedroom is $1,500/ month, or $18,000/year
We have a poverty crisis that isn’t being realized by the data, because federal guidelines say it’s A-OK for a person to be working full time and living on the street
Literally what the movie is about
