ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Although modern horoscopes typically consist of life advice, it's almost certainly terrible advice because it was written by someone who failed at legitimate or useful employment.12·15 hours agoAnything that helps society eudaimonily? What else would it be? A baker has legitimate employment, a grifting politician doesn’t. If you’re a moral relativist you might say things like “but goodness/usefulness is subjective!!!” but that’s just intellectual laziness and autistic fence sitting, in reality things are very clear cut besides a few examples.

If you’ve reached that level of intellectual laziness and personal responsibility, you might as well just coin flip every decision you make…
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•This song triggers late millennials and zoomers1·15 hours agoIt’s a beautiful song! The lyrics are very touching and realistic… but the West lost its heart and depth sometime in the last century (people used to dance to “Baby Come Back” and Barry White, there used to be real emotion, real lyrics and vulnerability in display, now we have Ice Spice). It’s poetry with a chill melodic base, those who don’t care for the poetry might not appreciate it and I guess that’s fine and expected.
First time hearing it btw, thanks for the recommendation!

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who here cries at TV shows or movies?2·1 day agoWhen it’s good, certainly. We gotta grab whatever chance we have to feel things intensely, unless the moment doesn’t call for it, before our time is up and we can’t anymore!

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever been rejected just because of your height?55·2 days agoI don’t think so, no, but I’ve definitely been rejected because they didn’t think I was cute. The world has gone downhill ever since they let women pick their mates! 😤
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If the internet didn't exist, do you think you would've have the same political ideology, religion/philosophy, and the overall worldview on life?3·2 days agoSimply because I wouldn’t have met my wife, I suppose I wouldn’t have. Also, being on the more “conversational” parts of the chans as a late teen made me (perhaps surprisingly) very empathetic and more merciful with my judgement and actions, and helped create a bigger “barrier” of human understanding between the words I hear/read and my reaction to them (very helpful as a hyperactive, sensitive guy!). But most of my ideology’s “building blocks” come from very old and popular books, so maybe I would’ve developed into it/found my way to it, just a bit later. How could I know? 😅
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Are humans really so predictable that algorithms can easily see thru us, or does continuous use of algorithm feeds make us predictable to their results?1·2 days agoWe are, but only the truly simple minded can be thoroughly swayed and changed into an antisocial beast of propaganda, tasked with toil and consumption. So, there’s no need to vilify “the algorithms” or their results… there’s nothing wrong with YouTube recommending me a Japanese “Careless Whisper” cover from the 80s, based on my previous input. 😅

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If the Romans had put Jesus in a box with Schrödinger's cat, Christians’ souls would be in a quantum superposition of saved and damned.2·2 days agoThe Roman Empire co-opted the whole movement and changed their state religion and it was all because of some comic book character? Pretty stupid of them! 👀
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If the Romans had put Jesus in a box with Schrödinger's cat, Christians’ souls would be in a quantum superposition of saved and damned.2·2 days agoYou’re not “judged” if you just “believe in Jesus Christ”. I mean, what would God even judge you on if the priest already “absolved you of your sins” and Jesus also “died for your sins”? 🙄 🤷
One exclamation mark would’ve fixed it. 🤷

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it misogynistic if I prefer to date traditional Latina women?1·3 days ago“I want a hardworking guy who shares my cultural background, to avoid any unnecessary friction with our families.” I don’t see the hatred or disregard for the humanity of women in your position. Who told you you were being misogynistic?
Gratefulness and strong bonds.
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Who's your favorite philosopher or religious figure and what is their key thought explained simply?0·3 days agoSolomon and his “Ecclesiastes” (I don’t think the Qur’an counts if you truly believe it to be divinely inspired/dictated, and I also read Solomon first so…). If you haven’t read it, go do so. Before your favourite Western existentialist, before Nietzsche and copycats, there was Solomon.
Edit: and what Solomon posited/understood was that life is ultimately meaningless, so find satisfaction in your toil, eat, drink and be merry and enjoy your meaningless life with your spouse. But before everything and, after all has been said: fear God and keep his commandments, for this is your whole duty (Ecclesiastes assumes you know about/is for those who believe in Abrahamic/Mosaic monotheism). Not too revolutionary today, maybe (many most focus on the “eat and drink” part, I guess, lol), but this is not from today and will be relevant forever. I mean, some of you probably quote Ecclesiastes often (nothing new under the sun, the fly in the ointment, there’s a time for everything, with much wisdom comes much sorrow, chasing after wind, and many more!) and don’t even know it. 😁
Why do they even bother with lies and narratives at this point? I’m sure they could just say “we’re bombing X cause they’re meanies” and Americans would clap before enlisting…
